窗边的小豆豆 - 2016-02-14 22:52:56

I finished to read “窗边的小豆豆”, it is a Chinese version of famous Japanese book “窓ぎわのトットちゃん”(by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi) or "Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window".

I already read “トットちゃんとトットちゃんたち”("Totto-chan's children"). It is a record of the journey that Ms. Kuroyanagi had visited poor countries as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. Many children suffered from a civil war, unhygienic conditions, preventable disease and hunger.

Addition, I hadn't read “窗边的小豆豆” in any languages, therefore initially I thought the book is also a record of children in poor countries. But in fact, it is a non-fictional autobiography of Ms. Kuroyanagi's childhood.

In the childhood, Ms. Kuroyanagi called herself "Totto-chan"(小豆豆/xiao doudou in the Chinese book). Because she is very naughty, she had to drop out of general schools. Finally she enrolled a very unique school called "Tomoe academy"(巴学园/ba xueyuan in the book).

Probably everyone imagined once "if my classroom is a train..." but everyone also know it is just a fantasy. However, it wasn't a fantasy. The academy had used remodeling trains as classrooms.

Educational policies of the academy also are very unique. For example, the academy didn't conduct a lesson as other schools. Instead, a teacher wrote today's tasks on a blackboard first, each student may study the tasks in any order.

The original version of the book published on 1981, and this is the story before the end of the World War 2, but Japan in the 21st century still has same problems.

The principal of the academy is a very gentle person, Totto-chan had never seen that he gets angry. But someday, he got angry with a teacher because the teacher blurted out careless words that may hurt a disabled child. The principal always made an effort to give self-confidence to each child even if who has a disability.

In contemporary Japan, many people, sometimes famous people or politicians who show discriminatory opinions to the public like "the disabled are useless", "the disabled have to die" without any shame.

Someday, when Totto-chan was returning from the academy to her home, a boy suddenly threw an insulting voice to her "Korean!" She was surprised, told her mother about it. The mother wept and told her that the boy is a Korean. Because he has been subjected to insults, he believed "Korean" is an insulting word. You are a Japanese, he is a Korean, but he is a child the same as you, so you must not discriminate absolutely.

It is a story before the end of the World War 2, at this time many Japanese had looked down Korean and other Asian people. I have respect for her mother. In the 21st century, racists often appear on the major cities in Japan, they shout "kill Koreans!", "cockroach!", "I'll open Tsuruhashi(*) massacre". Police protect them and interfere anti-racist protesters. And of course, PM of Japan is a racist.

(*)A city in Osaka prefecture. There is one of the biggest Korean-towns in Japan.

"Totto-chan's children", it published on 1997, it showed us about hardship of people, especially children in poor and dangerous countries. However, on 2015, a Japanese foolish racist drew an illustration insulting refugees "good idea, let's do a refugee". Of course, the illustration was blamed by many people around the world. But the problem wasn't finished. Surprisingly, an illustrated book by the racist that has been published by Senrindo, a Japanese publisher that published a lot of discriminatory books.

Sometimes I can't believe that I live in a developed country of the 21st century.

The Art of War - 2014-06-15 22:05:33

The Art of War(孙子兵法/Sūnzi bīngfǎ) was wrote about 2,500 years ago. But still today, the text is considered one of the most important text of war.

In Japan, not a few people said "The Art of War is useful for business" and many books try to use the text for business that have been published. However, I don't agree almost these opinions. Because almost all business books interpreted The Art of War very conveniently. Sometimes there is a large contrast between an opinion of a book and an opinion of another book. I'm hard to trust them.

Of course, The Art of War is a text of war, not a text of business. For example:

Terrains can categorize six types: Tong, Gua, Zhi, Ai, Xian, Yuan.

Tong: Both sides can access to this terrain. You should occupy a better spot and secure your supply line.
Gua: This terrain is easy to go through, but difficult to return. If the enemy hasn't prepared for you, you'll get the victory. But the enemy has prepared, difficult to defeat the enemy and hard to retreat.
Zhi: To move first brings a disadvantage. In this terrain, you shouldn't move first, instead try to attract the enemy.
Ai: A narrow pass. If you occupy this terrain, await the enemy. When the enemy has occupied the terrain, you shouldn't move into there if the enemy defends there, you may move into there if the enemy doesn't defend there.
Xian: A rugged terrain. You should occupy this terrain first and await the enemy in a better spot. If the enemy occupies the terrain, you shouldn't attack.
Yuan: The enemy exists far away. If there is little difference of strength between both sides, the attacker will face a disadvantage.

This is very interesting. But is this useful for business(without sloppy interpreting)? I think no.

"Be rise the torch" episode in Han Feizi(韩非子) was wrote by Han Fei(about 280–233 B.C.) that prophesied this situation:

A scholar in Chu was writing a letter to a minister of Yan. Because he needs more light to write the letter, he said to his servant "Be rise the torch". But he made a mistake, he wrote "Be rise the torch" in the letter. The minister received this letter, he thought "Rise the torch? I guess it means respect the bright, in other words should adopt wise men for governance." Yan adopted wise men and the plan was successful.

This episode means "people interpret things selfishly". Han Fei laughed at us from about 2,200 years ago.

But in fact, Despite I don't agree almost "The Art of War is useful for business" opinions, The Art of War is useful for business. Because many business books were flavored by The Art of War have been published and many people bought them. That's obvious, The Art of War is useful for business.

If you only have read The Art of War in business books, I recommend to read the original. The Art of War in a business book must be selfish interpretation, a text of war was forced to screw into a vessel of business by each authors. It is more interest to read the original and make you own interpretation.

In this site, we can read The Art of War. Modern Chinese annotations are available.

Contrary of an impression, The Art of War is easy to read. Clear sentences and unique metaphors help to understand difficult theory. Chinese of this site is quite difficult for me, but The Art of War is not too hard, hence I was able to recognize rough meaning of the text.

熊出没 - 2014-03-09 02:14:38

It isn't easy to learn a new language. We must put a lot of effort into the studies. But studies can be painful, joyless and endless.

Even though no pain is no gain, joyless studies are inefficient. Interesting TV and radio programs will help the studies. Luckily we can watch/listen foreign contents by the internet.

I sometimes watch a Chinese animation 熊出没(Xióng chūmò/Bears spotted) to study Chinese.

This animation has been provided by CCTV, a debatable broadcaster. Because the broadcaster is criticized against their stance - very close to Chinese government.(Similar to today's Japanese NHK. The NHK's boss Mr.Momii said "We can't say 'left' when the government said 'right'". I think it is the most important role of mass-media to say "the crow is black" even if the government strongly said "the crow is white".)

However, this animation is an animation, probably hasn't any political colors.(But the animation drew the fight between a human woodcutter and animals in the forest. We might find very shallow satire against the environment of China or whole humanity.) You can watch it for fun or to study Chinese without pointless worry. Of course, Chinese subtitles are available for all words!

The story of the animation is too simple, like "Tom and Jerry" or other short films. 光头强 the woodcutter tries to chop woods in the forest. Brothers of bears 熊大, 熊二 and other animals try to impair his work for save their living place. The animals are anthropomorphic - can speak Chinese, can make a conversation with humans and can use modern tools if necessary.

熊大(Xióngdà): A brown bear. He is not only a powerful bear, he is also too clever. Sometimes he finds out Guangtou Qiang's traps and changes it to his advantage, sometimes he entraps Guangtou Qiang ingeniously.
He can use a rifle or modern weapons when he captures it from Guangtou Qiang. Although he and his friends usually use "natural" weapons like stones, wood catapults or honeycombs.

熊二(Xióngèr): A yellow bear. He is greedy and not much clever. He is easily entrapped by Guangtou Qiang. But he is powerful and his action often beats Guangtou Qiang.

Other animals: 松鼠(Sōngshǔ/squirrel), birds, a monkey or other animals often appear. They anger against Guangtou Qiang and try to protect the forest with the bears.

光头强(Guāngtóu Qiáng): A human woodcutter. He isn't stronger than bears but he armed with a chainsaw and a hunting rifle. Also he can use a bulldozer or other strong cars/equipments.
He often remodels from general equipments to over-technological ones. e.g. a strong car like a tank or an armored car, a super strong fan(can blow bears), a super chainsaw(can chop a big tree at one strike and can smash a rock) or a vending machine with capturing arms.
I don't understand why he doesn't become a mechanical engineer.

李老板(Li Lǎobǎn, "老板" means "boss"): He hasn't appeared in the screen but he often rings to Guangtou Qiang. Because Guangtou Qiang doesn't chop a sufficient amount of woods, he is almost angry.
Sometimes he sends some goods for Guangtou Qiang. One day he sent a mobile phone to survey Guangtou Qiang's work. One day also he sent a medal.(The award of "the worst woodcutter in the record")

(Toraeru) en Japonés significa "captura".
